Project-Led Learning - Sample Projects
Project-Led Learning - Sample Projects
By Daniel Yordy
If you have read some of my project-led learning articles and believe that project-led learning just might work for your child, I include here a list of possible project ideas under each of the ten learning categories. These are ideas only, you are more than welcome to use them or to extend these ideas to other similar things your child might be interested in doing.
Natural
- Take care of an animal (could include a 4-H project).
- Study wild plants or animals of the local region, go wildcrafting, or searching for tracks and habitat.
- Mark off an area in the back yard or woods and study the ecology of all life found in that area.
- Plant and tend a garden, vegetables or flowers. Put food on the table, or cut flower arrangements to cheer the home.
- Plant, tend, and gather herbs. Learn the uses of medicinal or culinary herbs.
Physical
- Learn and play football.
- Learn and play basketball.
- Learn and play baseball.
- Learn swimming.
- Learn and play golf.
- Learn a style of dance.
Scientific
- Purchase a science kit and do experiments (chemistry, geology, etc.) (check out Pitsco - get their free catalog).
- Obtain a telescope and learn astronomy.
- Purchase a microscope and learn about cell structure and one-celled animals.
Mathematical/Logical
- Learn to play chess.
- Design a bridge - construct a model. (I am convinced that one of the reasons so many children struggle with math is that they do not build complicated things with their hands. There is a direct correlation between working with complex physical patterns and mathematical thinking.)
- Purchase a book of math puzzles and work them out.
Technological
- Build robotic devices from kits.
- Build electronic devices from kits.
- Build a computer.
- Make a movie focusing on the equipment used.
- Study photography, focusing on the equipment used.
Literary
- Read great books.
- Write short stories.
- Write poetry.
- Write and publish a newsletter (this newsletter could be directly related to a project from a different category).
Vocational
- Make woodworking projects.
- Make metalworking projects.
- Do crafts.
- Take apart a car engine and put it back together again. (Note that this could also fall under Technology).
- Learn to cook a variety of foods.
- Make clothing and other sewing or knitting work.
Artistic
- Paint pictures.
- Draw sketches.
- Play an instrument, join a band, or sing in a choir.
- Learn a style of dance. (Note that this also falls under Physical.)
- Learn acting with a theater group.
- Take pictures, focusing on the artistic side of photography.
Social
- Read quality historical fiction.
- Read biographies.
- Do a geography project.
- Study a people group, do a project.
- Do a country of the world project.
- Do a history time-period project.
Spiritual or Moral/Contemplative
- Spend time in Bible, religious or moral studies, prayer and praise, or contemplation. (There is no reason why attending religious services cannot be included as a part of schooling and as a project for your child).
- Do ministry with your local church, synagogue, or other community group.
- Go on a mission trip or a trip to another country to work with people in need.
- Help the poor nearby - food bank, etc.
- Do a study project on a great moral or religious figure.
- Read great inspirational books.
You can see how, if your middle school child were engaged in 14 of these types of projects through the school year, with a minimal amount of "academic busy-work," he or she would gain an understanding of the world in which they live way beyond what regular educational curriculum can give.
