Project-Led Learning - Student Requirements

Project-Led Learning - Student Requirements
By Daniel Yordy

Student Requirements for Projects:

The student will:

  • Keep a log of all times spent on each project.
  • Keep a written account of what is done and what is learned.
  • Include elements in each project from each of the subject areas.
  • Produce a 15 minute video of the project, or a scrapbook, or a web page describing the project for others to read. (Or all three.)

The time spent on the project must be productive, but can go in any direction the student chooses. Each student will work together with his or her parents to fulfill project requirements.

Integrating Academic Learning:

In approaching your projects, include elements from each of the subject areas:

  1. Language Arts - reading and writing.
  2. Mathematics - figuring or graphing, keeping accounts, and logic.
  3. Social Sciences - history of, geography of.
  4. Sciences - chemistry of, physics of, etc.
  5. Fine Arts - subject found in art.
  6. Technologies - tooks and equipment used.
  7. Physical Disciplines - hard work and training.
  8. Spiritual or Moral Disciplines - application to task.

Obviously, the parents will have to assist the child in determining how to structure the project so that the child learns without being distracted too much from the joy of doing things.

Here is another approach to this style of learning.

See the World In a Drop of Water:

  1. Stories and poems about water - (Water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink).
  2. Mathematical properties of a drop of water.
  3. Geography of water, impact of water on history.
  4. Evaporation and condensation of water - physical/chemical characteristics of water - hydrology.
  5. Organisms found in a drop of water - use in the human body.
  6. Paintings of waters scenes, light shining through a drop of water, songs about water.
  7. Water technologies.
  8. Swimming.
  9. Symbolism in the Bible or other inspirational works - (Give a cup of cold water).
